About The Artist

Daniela Serna aka @akupercu is a New York-based Colombian artist, Latin percussionist (tamborera), songwriter, educator, and cultural ambassador of caribbean oral traditions such as cumbia and bullerengue. She learned these traditions by traveling for the last 20 years to small villages and festivals in Colombia to study with cultural elders such as Emilsen Pacheco, Petrona Martinez and Martina Camargo.

Her artistic narrative is deeply rooted in female collectives. From her early days with La Perla whom she won with “Mejor Grupo Aficionado” at the Festival Nacional de Gaitas Francisco Llirene, 2015 (first time in history for a Bogotá female band to receive the award) to her pivotal role in LADAMA since 2014,  which has achieved some of the most relevant platforms of Music today, such as Tiny Desk, TED Talk, Latin American Music Awards, Monterey Jazz Fest, Womex 2018, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall.

Daniela’s expertise as a traveling artist—bringing Colombian rhythms outside her country have profoundly shaped her worldview and her innovative approach to composition, performance, and improvisation which she incorporates into her collaborative work, allowing her to perform  on stage with Pascuala Ilabaca (CHI) and Lido Pimienta (COL).

Awarded as a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Folk/Traditional Arts (2024) and featured at The New York Times as the musical director of La Manga, where she fosters a study group for women to play Afro-Colombian drums; to recording  a 45’ vinyl with New York city’s all-female salsa orchestra,  Lulada-Club. in the city where the genre was born, Daniela keeps breaking music stereotypes garnered media attention, including features in Rolling Stone Magazine, NPR All thing considered, TeleMundo, Latino USA, NowThis, BBC and Vogue Brasil as well as opening for artists like Eddie Palmieri, Herbie Hancock, Susana Baca, Vieux Farka Touré and The Klezmatics.

At the heart of Daniela 's current musical journey is her solo project, AKUPERCU. With her debut album “LO–FI TAMBO” she fearlessly combines genres, like merengue, plena and techno exploring her curiosity for electronic music, rap and Caribbean diasporic rhythms.
